How can urban agriculture become an integral part of a climate-resilient, biodiversity-promoting, and livable city? This question was the focus of the Zukunftsforum Urbane Landwirtschaft on October 13, 2026, at the Design Zentrum Hamburg.
The forum brought together stakeholders from the real estate industry, open space planning, agriculture, nature conservation, research, administration, and civil society. The results of the research project “Innovationsareal Urbane Landwirtschaft Öjendorf” served as the starting point for an intensive exchange on the future of Hamburg’s urban landscape. In the synopsis, the breadth of the project work became clear: from practical experiences on the test and demonstration site to the assessment of ecosystem service potentials, through to jointly developed future visions and planning approaches for agricultural parks. The results show how agricultural production, biodiversity, recreation, and education in urban green spaces can be considered together.

Stimulating conversations, critical questions, and new ideas characterized the event. Despite differing professional perspectives, a shared point of reference emerged: the question of how Hamburg’s green spaces can be designed, used, and sustained in the long term, and what contribution urban agriculture can make to this.

We would like to thank all participants for the engaged discussions and the diverse impulses. The exchange made it clear how valuable collaboration across professional and sectoral boundaries is for the further development of urban agriculture.
The consolidated results will be published in the form of a handbook at the end of this year.
